Overview

The ICE North East Early Careers Network (ICE NE ECN) exists for graduate, student, apprentice and technician ICE members working in the Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and Tees Valley regions. This includes those in higher education and/or those working towards getting professionally qualified.

The ICE NE ECN meets monthly to share knowledge and support each other through early career development. We also organise talks, site visits and networking events throughout the year. The group is run by a committee of core volunteers, currently led by our co-chairs Robert Chesney and Nuwanthi Thennakoonwela.

Being part of the committee is a fantastic way to learn and develop skills and build up evidence for initial professional development (IPD), which is an essential part of preparing for professional qualification. It is also a great opportunity to meet likeminded individuals in the region and expand your professional network.

We currently have several named positions available on the committee – open to any enthusiastic graduates, apprentices, technicians, or students. These are yearlong, voluntary positions, which require members to commit to attending monthly meetings and occasionally assisting in running events for the 2024/25 period.

The open positions are:

  • Secretary
  • Communications Rep
  • Education Rep

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will consist of an introduction to the existing committee and an overview of the open positions. There will then be time for questions before delegates are nominated. For those who cannot make it and wish to volunteer, please send a few sentences about yourself and why you are interested to [email protected].

The AGM will be preceded by a knowledge share about transport engineering. This will be delivered by the NE ECN members Adam Wilkinson and Dom Corr. Adam and Dom will provide an insight into their roles as transport engineers at Arup, and the work they have helped to deliver both in the UK and aboard.

Dom will provide an overview of the importance of designing for active modes in helping to achieve a more sustainable transport system and highlight some of the key design principles that must be considered. Adam will outline the utility management processes he has encountered on projects and the necessity of these to ensure the safe diversion of utilities and minimise disruption.
