Bryan Penny CEng MICE
Bryan Penny is a Senior Associate working in the Mott MacDonald, Building and Cities unit in Sheffield. He has had a career in Civil Engineering spanning 30 years, starting work as a graduate site engineer before moving to engineering consultants to work on restoration of coal mining sites and environmental improvements to water courses and rivers. Over the past 10 years, he has been occupied with Flood Defence schemes in the Yorkshire and Humber region, working with both local authorities and the Environment Agency. The common theme is that flood defence and water management directly improve the lives of communities, protecting homes and businesses and the infrastructure that they rely on. The implementation of schemes helps support further investment and development in an area while reassuring property owners that the risk of flooding has been reduced.
There is an increasing focus within clients and communities for providing schemes that bring environmental and ecological benefits, schemes which also minimise the impacts of construction and use low-carbon materials, all while ensuring optimum value. Bryan’s role in leading and supporting the development of flood alleviation schemes requires constant updating of his knowledge to stay abreast of the latest legislation and regulations as well as developments in industry best practices. He feels it is important to take some time to reflect on strategic issues and consider what the future challenges will be as we move further towards climate uncertainty.
