Overview

The ICE Yorkshire & Humber region is made up of several branches and special interest groups who work together towards the ICE Vision and Values through a wide variety of activities throughout the year.
It is time again for a brief AGM where we say goodbye to our outgoing Yorkshire & Humber Chair Bryan Penny, declare our current position and then welcome our incoming Yorkshire & Humber Chair.

All members are very welcome and we would love for you to find out what we do, and maybe even get more involved.

There are many ways you can become more active, and we have several available roles which can enhance your CV.  For more information about our committees, see our committees web pages and if you are interested to get involved in any capacity, please contact [email protected] so we can put you in touch with the relevant chair/s.

The AGM will be followed by a presentation by Mark Calvert on John Smeaton noted as the “father of civil engineering”, marking 2024 as the 300th anniversary of his birth here in Yorkshire. Mark has personally completed a project to develop a 3D model of perhaps Smeaton’s most famous work, the Eddystone Lighthouse.

Individual elements can be printed out and built into a scale model of the lighthouse, providing a brilliant educational insight into the workings of the structure and the elegance of Smeaton's design. It demonstrates how the design techniques we use today were developed and used by Smeaton so many years ago.

Bryan Penny CEng MICE

Bryan Penny is a Senior Associate working in the Mott MacDonald, Building and Cities unit in Sheffield.  He has had a career in Civil Engineering spanning 30 years, starting work as a graduate site engineer before moving to engineering consultants to work on restoration of coal mining sites and environmental improvements to water courses and rivers. Over the past 10 years, he has been occupied with Flood Defence schemes in the Yorkshire and Humber region, working with both local authorities and the Environment Agency. The common theme is that flood defence and water management directly improve the lives of communities, protecting homes and businesses and the infrastructure that they rely on. The implementation of schemes helps support further investment and development in an area while reassuring property owners that the risk of flooding has been reduced.

There is an increasing focus within clients and communities for providing schemes that bring environmental and ecological benefits, schemes which also minimise the impacts of construction and use low-carbon materials, all while ensuring optimum value. Bryan’s role in leading and supporting the development of flood alleviation schemes requires constant updating of his knowledge to stay abreast of the latest legislation and regulations as well as developments in industry best practices. He feels it is important to take some time to reflect on strategic issues and consider what the future challenges will be as we move further towards climate uncertainty.
