The Minsmere Valley on the Suffolk Coast is at risk from both fluvial and coastal flooding. Although it is a rural area with a limited number of properties at risk, protection against flooding is required as much of the hinterland is designated under international legislation – the area is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA), Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Ramsar wetland site.

Being a coastal location, the designated features and species are of both coastal and freshwater interest. The existing defences and gravity drained tidal sluice are under pressure due to sea level rise. The talk outlines how a long term plan was developed for adaptation to coastal change and focuses on the Minsmere Flood Risk Management scheme that was completed in 2012.

A summary of continuing management is also provided.
