Overview

The paper reviews the nature of social interactions in the road and street environment. The main contribution is a discussion of the implications resulting from the prospective operation of autonomous vehicles on four typologies of infrastructure as follows:

  1. segregated networks
  2. motorways and expressways
  3. urban roads and streets
  4. priority routes for human-scale mobility.

Finally, a summary is provided of further research that is needed to understand the implications of the operation of autonomous vehicles on the public road network.
