The E4 Stockholm Bypass is a new motorway linking northern and southern Stockholm; 18km of its total 21km are in tunnels in order to reduce the impact on the environment. When completed, it will be one of the longest road tunnels in the world. The AECOM and ÅF joint venture provided detailed design and contract preparation for the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket).

With more than 500 designers working across nine countries, a project of this complexity required extraordinary collaboration strategies. Adopting BIM and applying a common data environment provided effective cooperation, enhanced optioneering and higher quality during the design development.

The presentation will provide an overview of the E4 Stockholm Bypass, its scope, and the main challenges associated with working on a major international project. It will provide an overview of how Building Information Modelling (BIM) was successfully implemented in this project, as well as the application of innovative approaches and technology.

The talk will also include the main outcomes and conclusions following the completion of the design phase.
