Build the future – Q&A with civil engineering apprentices, online

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2022, we’re bringing together a panel of civil engineering apprentices from across sectors to explain how they got started and answer YOUR questions.

Civil engineers apprentices are working across the South West on crucial infrastructure projects that impact the way we all live and will increasingly help us to adapt to climate change and reduce carbon emissions.

From railways to cycle networks; flood defences to renewable power stations; next generation hospitals to low carbon housing, apprentice civil engineers are developing the skills and experience required to build the future.

During this online session, you’ll hear from three individuals at different stages on their apprenticeship journey. They’ll explain their route to becoming an apprentice, what they’ve been learning and offer some top tips for anyone thinking of following in their footsteps.

The panellists are:

  • Katie Lawson - Civil Engineering Apprentice Technician with Cormac Solutions, based in Cornwall.
  • Shannon Martin - Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice, employed by Arup, based in Bristol.
  • Jack Francis - Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice, working as a Highway Projects Engineer for Wiltshire Council.

The event will be hosted by Stuart Allen, chair of the ICE South West Regional Committee and Programme Delivery Deputy Director at the Environment Agency, who also started out on an apprenticeship programme.

This is a great opportunity to put a question direct to an apprentice. Why choose an apprenticeship over a ‘traditional’ uni course? What are the benefits of taking the earn as you learn route? How can you make a tangible difference in response to the climate emergency as a civil engineering apprentice?

This free online event is aimed at 16-18s considering future career options or looking to find out more about apprenticeships and civil engineering.
