A presentation by the structural engineer and architect on the Burrell Renaissance project.
The project involved the redevelopment of the Category A listed museum. The works comprised of replacing the building envelope and building services, improving access and circulation, and taking the opportunity to also reinterpret the existing collection. Narro were appointed for both the base build design and the exhibition design, providing both civil and structural design for the project.
This project involved the refurbishment of the Burrell Collection, which is in Pollok Park, South Glasgow. The museum was completed in 1983 to architectural acclaim but has suffered from water ingress issues over the years, which reduced the display areas available. However, a decision was taken in 2015 to refurbish the museum, to completely replace the building envelope and building services, whilst also taking the opportunity to reinterpret the collection and increase the percentage of the collection on display.
The existing building has four primary storeys, including basement, ground Floor, mezzanine and first floor. A small sub-basement is also present.
Since completion the project has gone on to win many awards such as:
- BCIA Awards 2022 – Cultural & Leisure Project of the Year – winner
- AJ Architecture Awards 2022 – Cultural Award – winner
- AJ Architecture Awards 2022 – Heritage – winner
- AJ Retrofit Awards 2023 – Cultural & Religious Building – winner
