Overview

The Thames Valley GSA Committee is delighted to host a virtual site visit of Walnut Bridge.

Walnut Bridge is an architecturally inspired steel bridge over the River Wey for pedestrians and cyclists. It provides a new connection from Guildford Station and Guildford Town Centre, and will be much safer for users than the current bridges. It will increase capacity for pedestrians and cyclists traveling across the river and help to incentivise active transport in Guildford.

It is due to open by the end of 2021, but in May, you will have the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes visit to the Walnut Bridge site.

The site visit will be led by Jono Wood, an engineer at Arcadis with four years' experience of design and assessment, site supervision, and project management for highway, pedestrian, and cycle bridges. Jono is the NEC Supervisor for Walnut Bridge and has been providing technical construction support to the Contractor on site (VolkerLaser).

Jono will talk about the key design challenges that have been faced both in the design phase and on site, how they were resolved, and the lessons learned. He will give a live tour of the site and show how the design is being brought to life.
