Overview

An introduction to the subject of embodied energy and carbon assessment in construction:

  • A landscape overview in this area, including the standards, methods and examples of leading organisations and projects that have taken action to reduce the embodied impacts of their infrastructure projects
  • The carbon context: Carbon in design, construction and operation
  • Innovation and carbon reduction

Discussion will include how to ensure:

  • Better specification of current mainstream material
  • Specification of alternative materials: timber, rammed earth, hempcrete etc
  • Design leaner structures and material optimisation
  • Design for deconstruction, reuse and recovery
  • Design for future use, adaptability and flexibility
  • Minimise waste
  • Life Cycle Analysis
