Overview

Suicide is regarded as largely preventable by professionals – but prevention is a complex and imperfect art.

One of the few strategies that has been proven as effective is reducing the availability of means.

So, by designing bridges that cannot be jumped from, engineers can prevent some suicides.

This event will see Scotland’s Emerging Engineer 2023 winner Katie O’Neill present her paper on an evaluation of the effectiveness of bridge perimeter pedestrian barriers, with a design proposal of enhancement.
