Overview

Hear about the installation analysis evolution to meet the challenges of the JSEP project:

The talk will discuss how the approaches to installation analysis advanced in order to support the robust engineering solutions for the JSEP project. The solution in the nearshore fjord section included pulling the 36-inch pipe into a 48-inch tunnel without a bellmouth, placing the pipe around tight bends with counteracts, and landing the pipe on a highly irregular seabed using preinstalled intervention works in water depths up to 550m.

This was achieved while complying with tight tolerances needed to avoid the existing pipelines, cables and seabed features in the area, which dictated this extreme pre-lay intervention design solution. At the Johan Sverdrup field the pipeline had to be installed following a snakelay design and laid down close to the platform requiring specific movements of the CastorOne.

3D seabed data were provided for the nearshore fjord section so modelling techniques were developed to simulate the installation of the pipeline over and around seabed features in order to understand the pipeline-seabed interaction. Low touchdown tension requirements meant a highly optimised lay solution was required, which drove the automation development for producing static analysis cases accurately and in large quantity.

The automation techniques were expanded to maximise the installation vessel operability by establishing a detailed comprehension of the vessel response to extreme environmental conditions. The wealth of dynamic results data fed into validation for an investigation concerning bend stability for the more challenging route curves in the nearshore area and snake lay section. During the offshore campaign the automation techniques expanded from the installation software to the CastorOne’s on board parameter recording system. Customisable plotting tools were developed to build a picture of the on board activities, such as pipe pulls, using the vessel logger data, enabling fast turnaround for vessel management and client queries.
