Overview
The Harding Prize competition is named in honour of Sir Harold Harding, the founding Chairman of the BTS. The competition is open to young engineers aged 33 or under. An original paper submitted for the competition must address aspects of tunnelling which are considered of interest to the tunnelling industry, with the winning paper selected by a judging panel.
The following three finalists will present their paper(s):
- David Maddison: The design and construction of complex offshore structures. The Hinkley Point C tunnel to shaft connections.
- Christopher Hewett: The construction of large-diameter shafts within challenging ground conditions.
- Sam Huckle: Tunnel d’Yvoir – When tunnelling becomes a passion project.

Christopher Hewett
Christopher is currently the delivery manager for groundwater management and shaft construction for Costain (SCS Railways) on the HS2 project, having previously been a section engineer on the project.
Sam has managed the construction of various activities including sprayed concrete lined shafts and developed temporary works on the project.
He has also worked on Thames Tideway and multiple other Thames Water sites, undertaken marine works site duties at Avonmouth, and worked on the Crossrail project as a site engineer.

David Maddison
David is a tunnel engineer at Jacobs and has experience working on UK national and international civil engineering projects.
He has primarily worked on the Hinkley Point C (HPC) Marine Works project, contributing to the detailed design of both the onshore and offshore tunnels and shafts. He has also undertaken a secondment with Balfour Beatty undertaking an on-site design coordination role to support the construction and handover of the cooling water tunnels and shafts of HPC.
David’s other responsibilities have included, management of junior and senior site representatives, the production of structural models (2D and 3D), calculation packages and technical reports, the development of construction drawings and the management of their production.

Sam Huckle
Sam is a civil and mining engineer with experience gained internationally in the delivery of major construction projects within main works contractor, client's engineer/advisory, and client roles. He is trained to an APM standard of project management, a holder of a current VOL-VCA safety certification, and is currently progressing towards Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers.
He has been package manager and project engineer on various projects in the Netherlands and France and worked on the Thames Tideway project for Balfour Beatty as ECI and design coordinator, and tunnel shift engineer. Sam is also an elected member of the International Tunnel Association's Young Member Steering Board.
