The Harding Prize competition is named in honour of Sir Harold Harding, the founding Chairman of the BTS. The competition is open to young engineers aged 33 or under.

Original paper submitted must address aspects of tunnelling which are considered of interest to the tunnelling industry, with the winning paper selected by the BTS Committee.

The following three finalists will present their paper:

Omar Mohammed (TFL) - Deep Pile Foundation Interceptions at Bank Station

The LU Bank Station Capacity Upgrade and Bank Bloomberg Place Projects will address underground station congestion, improve journey times and interchange, and provide step free access to Northern Line and DLR through the station. The paper describes the design and construction for the Deep Foundation Pile Interceptions at Bank Station.

Mohamad Fahed (Mott McDonald) - Investigation into the Splitting Strength of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete in Tunnel Segmental Lining

Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) has been increasingly used in the construction industry due to various benefits. There is no universally accepted design standard and very little published data on the splitting failure caused by TBM rams. The paper investigates the influence of TBM eccentric loading, steel fibre type and dosage on the splitting strength of SFRC segments.

Jennifer Henderson (TFL) - Getting on the right track: Early stage design in subsurface transport infrastructure

The early stages of any project are critical to setting the scope and design principles. The inclusion of early tunnelling design delivers a more robust and holistic understanding of the project, resulting in increased viability of the project progressing to delivery. The paper identifies the positive influence tunnelling professionals can have during the early stage design and lessons learnt from various LU station upgrade projects.
