Overview

Oliver Williams, an ICE member with many years’ experience living and working in France, will describe his experience dealing with numerous buildings in Paris. In particular, the introduction of plumbing and electricity brought buildings up to date but also introduced the hazard of rot and fire.

Oliver will explain the hazards and bad practice he has encountered in modifications made during the lifetime of the buildings. He will point out the warning signs of problems, discuss what tools are available to help diagnose the problems and look at structural stability when faced with bringing a building up-to-date.

The webinar will be of interest to anyone working with, or modifying ancient structures.

Oliver Williams

Oliver is a structural and façade engineer having worked extensively in both France and the UK.

Initially training as a mechanical engineer, he converted to structural engineering in Paris at RFR and then onto façade engineering. Further experiences with Atelier One (London) and VP Green (Paris) gave great opportunity to discover a vast range of engineering possibilities.

After branching out into his own office (LOFT4), the balance between historic and modern projects enabled the pursuit of the investigation of materials and techniques from various eras.

The ongoing idea behind LOFT4 is to understand the inherent properties of a system from bolts to overall structures.
