Immersive and Interactive Technologies – some definitions
“Interactive media is a method of communication in which the output from the media comes from the input of the users. Interactive media works with the user's participation.”
“Immersive technology refers to technology that blurs the line between the physical world and digital or simulated world, thereby creating a sense of immersion.”
Expanding Reality - Luke Cooper, Arup
This talk will challenge perceptions and highlight the great opportunity that applying Virtual/Augmented/Mixed/Cross Reality can give. Understanding how we can use this technology to aide existing challenges whether this is at the design stage or the wider life cycle will revolutionise how we perceive, create and apply solutions across the industry.
Implementing New Digital Technologies - Aled Lloyd, Atkins SNC Lavalin
Aled Lloyd will talk about how Atkins SNC Lavalin is implementing new digital technologies and how some of their design processes are being disrupted, changed and improved.
VR enhanced teaching – Dr Clare Wood and Dr Patricia Xavier, Swansea University
A key aspect of Swansea University’s Civil Engineering training is the exploration and development of imaginative, viable Civil Engineering conceptual solutions to problems. VR offers students the chance to immerse themselves within their designs and relate their design decisions to the experience of their spatial extent in real time.
In this presentation, Dr Clare Wood and Dr Patricia Xavier discuss their experiences of developing VR-enhanced teaching, and if and how such technologies could enhance students’ development of concept design skills. In particular, their research concerns how using VR to enhance spatial awareness may assist in better preparing graduates to tackle real-world, complex design problems.
