Overview

This is a webinar to present IPD best practice, including examples and tips from a mix of Chartered and Incorporated Engineers who have recently passed their professional review. 

The aim of this session will be to cover:

  • Each presenter’s personal experience with signing off attributes
  • Their agreed approach to IPD between themselves and and their DE/SCE
  • Overall what they thought they did well or could have done better/any tips or advice for those currently on the journey
  • Q&A

This is hosted by the newly formed ICE East of England Early Careers Network committee.

Ian is an Incorporated Engineer (MICE, January 2024) who works for Mott MacDonald Limited as a senior civil engineer having worked for the company for the last 6 years working primarily on projects within the infrastructure sector, working on notable projects such as High Speed 2, East West Rail, and the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet National Highways project.

Ian graduated from Portsmouth University in 2014 with a 1st class honours degree in civil engineering before beginning his career as a site engineer for Dyer and Butler out of Southampton before leaving to work on The Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Broadland Northway) as a Section Engineer at Balfour Beatty until 2018.

Jen is a Chartered Civil Engineer at AtkinsRéalis, working within the Design and Advanced Technology Team based in Bristol.

Jen studied civil engineering at the University of Bristol, and following graduation in 2014, started as a graduate engineer working on highways maintenance, renewal and improvement schemes in the South West.

In 2017, she joined AtkinsRéalis to gain more technical design experience and since then has worked on several major infrastructure projects within the nuclear and defence industries. Her main interests are in the design and substantiation of seismically qualified structures.

Charlie joined AtkinsRéalis as a degree apprentice in 2018, balancing a part time BSc civil engineering degree with delivering and managing highway engineering projects.

After 5 years as an apprentice, he now works as an Incorporated Engineer (MICE) in AtkinsRéalis' Highways and Active travel team, leading a sub-team of Early Careers staff. Alongside his work, Charlie is studying part-time at UCL towards an MSc in civil engineering, is an active Mental Health First Aider, STEM Ambassador and member of the ICE Essex branch.

Tom is a Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE, January 2024) who works for VolkerFitzpatrick as a site agent having worked for the company for the last 6+ years, working primarily on projects within the transport infrastructure sector. Notably working on projects such as High Speed 2 - Old Oak Common Station development, Brent Cross West Station (recently opened in December 2023), and the Barking Riverside Extension project for TfL.

Tom graduated from Loughborough University in 2018 with a 1st class honours degree in civil engineering with a diploma in industrial studies, following a year in industry with VolkerFitzpatrick in 2015. Tom rejoined VolkerFitzpatrick upon graduation as a site engineer working on Network Rail Control Period 5 - Structures.

He has since continued his career through the engineering roles, subsequently entering more managerial roles as sub-agent and now site agent. Tom also has experience working within a design organisation following a 6-month secondment with Mott MacDonald in 2023, working on preliminary designs for Highway Structures for a National Highways Scheme.
