Overview
On the 22nd and 23rd August 2017, severe thunderstorms affected North West Northern Ireland. Several areas received unprecedented levels of rainfall. This resulted in widespread flooding, approximately 400 homes, numerous businesses and significant areas of agricultural land were impacted. There was also significant damage to infrastructure with 210 roads either closed or impacted and 89 bridges requiring remedial action because of the flooding.
Dr Will Lang, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office will present a webinar where he will explain the scientific challenge of forecasting such intense thunderstorms and give an insight into continuing research aimed at improving the forecasting and warning of such events in the future.
