Overview
This talk will cover how an extensive innovation programme is been applied to convert the £4.5billion liability of abandoned UK coal mines into an asset of strategic importance to the Country. How a circa £20million annual cost to Government, in managing the risk of polluted mine water, is on track to become a net benefit.
It will cover what is innovation, the processes that are effective, how to maintain engagement and how to get stakeholders, and investors, on board. This will be a warts and all conversation, covering the pitfalls and difficulties of innovating, how to manage this as an individual and organisation, how to tackle preconceptions and resistance, and how to manage an invocation cycle from beginning to successful delivery.
Areas to be covered are:
- What is innovation?
- How to successfully deliver innovation
- The conversion of waste materials into land remediation products
- Creation of mine energy projects using mines as a source of geothermal energy, for cooling and for storage of above ground renewable energy
- Step change redesign of mine-water treatment processes reducing footprints by 90% without using chemicals or power
- The creation of resilient off grid sustainable developments using mines to manage water supply, replace SUDS, manage flood water, heat homes and businesses, store energy, incorporate renewable energy, reduce polluting emissions, capture industrial and sewage energy and reduce load on the national infrastructure
- Application of transferable technologies in construction, maintenance and treatment
