Overview

Our infrastructure systems are being tested more regularly and more deeply. The need for sustainable, resilient infrastructure solutions that will meet the needs of society, and the economy is becoming ever more critical.
 
Join Juliet Mian and Chris Caves (Arup) as they discuss some of the key challenges and barriers to overcome, as well as the solutions that exist and the essential role that the engineers of today and of the future have in ensuring resilience in the face of uncertainty.

Juliet Mian

Juliet is the director of infrastructure resilience and global resilience skills leader at Arup, working with a broad community of inspiring and dedicated resilience practitioners.

Juliet helps organisations understand their risks due to climate change and other shocks and stresses and achieve greater resilience of the infrastructure systems for which they are responsible.

She promotes a systemic approach to resilience, considering robustness, redundancy, adaptive capacity and the ability to transform where necessary.

Juliet enjoys the multidisciplinary, cross-sectoral nature of her work, and seeks to deliver solutions through collaboration and integration across the system and throughout the infrastructure lifecycle.

Chris Caves

Chris leads Arup’s North transport group. He has led the delivery of many of Northern Ireland’s most significant projects, including A8 Belfast to Larne, Coleraine to Derry/Londonderry track renewals and the Belfast Grand Central Station transport hub.  
 
He is an advocate for inclusivity and community in the infrastructure professions, with a strong focus on encouraging engagement from underrepresented groups and early career engineers. 
 
Chris is past chair of ICE Northern Ireland, a Fellow of the Institution and a member of the ICE Fairness, Inclusion and Respect Panel.
