This lecture will suggest ways of approaching design in difficult rock engineering environments. It will draw on case studies from slope design and underground excavations in Europe and Asia.

The design and analysis of rock engineering projects in complex rock masses require careful consideration of the rock mass conditions and ground properties. Such cases are encountered in anisotropic rock masses, stratified layered rocks, tectonised rocks, mixed ground conditions, and soft rocks. Instabilities are generally either structurally or stress controlled, depending on the rock mass setting and in-situ stress conditions. Factors such as the scale effect and the quality of the rock mass should be carefully considered in slope design and underground excavations.

Harry Saroglou MSc, DIC, PhD

Harry Saroglou is a geotechnical expert advisor on High Speed 2 for Eiffage Kier Ferrovial BAM JV for High Speed 2. He teaches in the School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, and is an honorary visiting lecturer in the School of Earth Sciences, University of Leeds. He was previously a lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College, London. He has almost 25 years of experience in engineering geology and geotechnical engineering and has consulted for civil engineering (highways, railways, dams) and mining projects in Europe, Asia, Canada, and Australia.

He has received prestigious awards from the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (Richard Wolters, 2012), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (PIFI, 2016), and the Academy of Athens (2009). He is a member of the editorial boards of Géotechnique Letters, Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology, and Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment. His expertise areas include ground interpretation, geotechnical design, slope stability, tunneling, engineering geology in major infrastructure works, and mitigation of geohazards.
