Overview

Seacombe Ferry Terminal Refurbishment, ICE North West Medium Project winner.

The Mersey Ferries are a key part of Liverpool’s transport infrastructure, used daily by commuters and visitors and fully embedded into the city’s culture.

This unique refurbishment project, which has never been done before in a similar environment with similar challenges, has helped to secure the legacy of the ferries.

The work involved replacing Seacombe Ferry Terminal’s 130-year-old linkspan bridges, and the refurbishment of the landing stage to improve accessibility.

The team tackled a number of challenges, including:

  • tidal working within active shipping lanes
  • submerged historic structures, whose condition was unknown
  • the availability of floating plants and
  • the critical installation of the new linkspans - with a completion window of just one hour

Hear from Dave Hill, Regional Director, John Sisk & Son, about how the partners overcame the challenges and completed this award-winning civil engineering scheme, which is now safe for operation for many years to come.
