Overview

Viadux Phase 1 is a 40-storey residential development, built over an existing Grade II listed viaduct structure in the heart of Manchester city centre.

In this talk from Kevin Gilsenan and Patrick Clayton, they provide an overview of the development and the unique engineering response for the tower to provide an efficient solution, whilst addressing the challenges of building within and over the existing viaduct.

The approach to minimising the alterations and intervention to the Grade II listed viaduct is presented, including how the new column and core openings were formed through the existing masonry arch structure. Consideration of embodied carbon and lessons learnt will also be discussed.
