Overview
Join us for the fourth annual lecture on resilience, in the 'Shaping the World' series, organised by ICE, Heriot-Watt University and MWH Global. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Joan Clos, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), at the level of Under Secretary General by the United Nations General Assembly.
UN-Habitat is the United Nations programme working towards a better urban future. Its mission is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all.
For the first time in the history of development, the United Nations has been able to bring sustainable urbanization to the centre of the development narrative with evidence on the strong linkages between urbanization and development, climate change, peace, resilience towards natural and man-made disasters, as well as equitable socio-economic transformation. The future of world urbanization is critical, especially for developing countries where massive urban transformations are going to happen. Currently, 55% of the world's population lives in cities and it is expected to increase to 70% by 2050.
