The tragedy that was Grenfell rightly caused much deep thinking in the construction industry and government. The raft of legislation arising from that terrible incident is so necessary to prevent a further similar occurrence. However, they are already causing enormous distress in the PII market, forcing some existing practitioners without previous poor records to consider leaving the industry. And as practical as the new protocols appear, can they actually work on the ground? Have they been drafted by government officials at desks instead of those honed in the practical delivery of projects on the ground?

Stella Saunders
A qualified architect since 1983, Stella has over 35 years' experience working as a Designer and Principal Designer in private practice and for the past 15 years for Local Authority. She is currently leading the City's Architects group and has delivered CDM Principal Designer roles in non-housing Projects Design and Development for Cardiff Council since 2004.
Stella became a member of APS in 1995 and a Fellow in 2006, served as Wales Regional Chair from 2007 to 2011 and a Director from 2013. She has recently completed the role of UK wide APS President, taking office in October 2018.
Among many other commitments to furthering Health & Safety in construction, Stella has is currently sitting on the London HQ HSE SEE Committee for Small and Medium Enterprises and is a past Director of Constructing Excellence in Wales. Stella has served as Chair and is still an Executive Committee member of the South Wales Construction Safety Group.

Andrew Thomas
Andy is a practising Building Control officer with 45 years' experience at four local authorities and two approved inspectors and has worked throughout the UK.
He has worked on the Building Regulations Advisory Committee Wales with the Welsh Government, the Cabinet Office and the now Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities on changes to regulations and guidance.
He currently works as a Principal Building Control officer at Fylde Council, he has worked as a lecturer for RICS, RIBA and Thomas Telford training, on Building Regulations and is a member of the RICS Fire Safety Working Group.

Stuart is a Director of Project Management at Jones Laing LaSalle (JLL) and has 20 years’ experience of delivering complex construction projects within contracting and consulting businesses; delivering long-term value for occupiers, investors and developers.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB); Chartered Construction Manager and an Elected Committee Member for the CIOB, representing the profession in Wales.
