The talk reviews the construction and use of dams from very early times.
It is set in the context of the overriding need for structural stability because of the very high consequence of failure. This is especially appropriate at this time since specific legislation for the safety of reservoirs in Northern Ireland is currently well advanced.
The talk includes a selection of significant structures and some details of various improvements which have been made. It recognises the work of their designers, builders and custodians who have ensured their reliability.
