Overview

Totnes is a historic town renowned for its close-knit-community and architecture. Sadly, it has historically been badly impacted by flooding. Whilst a flood defence scheme was built in the 1980s, land use and climate change led to increased flood risk.

In 2018, the Environment Agency (EA) undertook major improvements to defences, reducing to the risk of flooding to 400+ homes and businesses. The scheme was developed by the EA and delivered by BMMJV, a joint venture between Mott MacDonald and BAM Nuttall as part of a Design and Build contract, delivered from Cardiff. We worked holistically, emphasising community involvement.

We collaboratively developed passive-solutions that incorporated environmental improvements, maximising the impact of our works and providing integrated solutions sympathetic to the built and natural environment. We had positive feedback from stakeholders and showed that sustainable schemes can be developed by fostering positive partnerships between government, the private sector, and the community.

Won the ICE Wales Cymru Designed in Wales Award and the Constructing Excellence South West Built Environment Sustainability Award 2019.
