Soon after the start of the first lockdown, the UK Government urged local authorities to reallocate road space to active travel. This resulted in the rapid rolling out of pop-up cycle lanes, pavement widening and modal filters to create ‘low traffic neighbourhoods’. This advice was followed in July 2020 by ‘Gear Change’, a strong policy statement instructing local authorities to provide better walking and cycling infrastructure. It also committed Government to establishing Active Travel England.
Covid-19 brought many challenges and changes but the rapid and significant growth in cycling, that took place across the UK during the spring and summer of 2020, was one of the more positive outcomes of the pandemic.
