Overview
As a result of a report commissioned to TRL in 2011, a number of observations and recommendations were recorded for the purpose of improving the process of highway maintenance, in particular the durability of Thin Surface Course Systems in use on the WG Strategic Road Network.
Consultation with contractors, as well as other highway operating bodies, has led to a process of improvement with the aim of broadening highway maintenance options and establishing methods of best practice. Changes in national guidance (in particular texture limits) have complemented the requirement to improve durability, but one of the main concerns for WG is still the consistency of materials durability installed throughout the network.
