This talk on the West Highland line will give a brief history of how it came in to being, the work involved and the need for rail to service the remote areas of the west. The shift from manned signal boxes to RETB signalling throughout the route in the digital age will also be discussed.

Speaker Keiren Sharkey from Network Rail, will cover and present on how maintenance has changed throughout the years; drawing on his own experiences and the challenges faced on a weekly basis. He will talk about several areas of real engineering interest throughout the West Highlands: whether that is assets it possesses or plant used.

He will shed light on his strategy over the past six years for enhancements of the permanent way and what is proposed to be achieved in terms of renewals over the course of the next 10 years. He will go into depth with some of his own experiences working on the West Highland Line - weather, earthwork failures, big jobs that have completed, and favourite moments that have really made a difference.
