Working with natural processes – the evidence behind Natural Flood Management

Dr Lydia Burgess-Gamble (Environment Agency) will be talking about the evidence behind Natural Flood Management. This event is organised by CIWEM Welsh branch and supported by ICE Wales Cymru. Members and non-members welcome.

There has been much research on Working with Natural Processes (WWNP) to reduce flood risk, but it has never been synthesised into one location, meaning that it has been hard for flood risk managers to access up-to-date information on it and to fully understand its potential benefits.

To address this gap, we have undertaken 3 interlinked projects which make up the WWNP evidence base, these projects were launched in October 2017.

The presentation will give an overview of the project as a whole covering the:

• Evidence Directory which summarises the effectiveness of WWNP measures from a FCRM perspective as well as their wider ecosystem service benefits. It also includes: a detailed literature review; 65 case study examples; 14 one-page summaries of each measure; and guidance on monitoring
• Maps which can be used with key partners to help think about the types of measure that may work in a catchment and where to potentially locate them.
• Research gaps that still need to be addressed to move this form of FCRM into the mainstream.

Cost for the event is FREE and intended for professional/educational purposes. Refreshments will be available (on a first come first served basis). This event is open to non-members.
