Young Professionals from leading UK maritime consultants, contractors and owner/operators will be presenting on projects they have influenced and providing an insight into the contribution they are making to our industry, as well as some specific challenges they have overcome.
The presentations will be 'short and snappy', a maximum of 5 minutes, with a total of 20 slides and only 15 seconds to present each slide!
Refreshments will be available from 1730 in the Brasserie and, following the seminar, the PIANC UK Committee invite all attendees to join them for sponsored drinks and networking.
This event is free and open to all professionals, young and old, with an interest in the planning, design and development of marine and waterways infrastructure.

British Antarctic Survey, Marine Infrastructure – Rothera Wharf Redevelopment
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has appointed Ramboll as its Technical Advisor for upgrades to marine infrastructure for the new state-of-the-art polar research vessel under construction named the RRS Sir David Attenborough. Rothera Wharf will serve as part of the BAS' largest research station and Antarctic hub, providing vital supplies to continue the pioneering science that benefits humanity.
The considerable scale of the challenge is pushing the boundaries of innovation and understanding in polar maritime design; constructing a wharf on a 45º highly fractured rock slope, resisting considerable ice actions, managing a complex logistical operation and maintaining a sustainable solution that compliments the thriving wildlife habitats. Rothera Wharf shall be a showcase for modern polar maritime engineering; setting precedent for greater robustness and longevity in the world's most extreme, harshest environment.
Isles of Scilly Quay Extension
With minimal resources on the island, precast was key. I will discuss how the design evolved and the particular challenges posed by working on the island. The solution consisted of over 50 blocks of bespoke design allowing the berth for the main cargo and passenger ferries to be extended. I will highlight some lessons learnt and how the project had a positive impact on the islanders.
The highlights, roles, and experience of a first year in Engineering
The presentation will provide personal highlights of the roles, tasks and training experienced throughout the course of a year since joining the maritime world as a graduate engineer. These range from collecting soil samples from earth embankments to assisting with the design of rock revetments, breakwaters and quay walls.
Typical challenges faced by graduate engineers beginning their working life and a focus on more specific challenges applicable to maritime and waterway engineering including multidisciplinary projects and that outside of conventional engineering.
Assessment of Existing Marine Oil Terminals
The focus of the presentation will be the methodologies that Mott MacDonald have been developing to assess existing marine oil terminals. The aim was to provide a framework for efficient information gathering through a series of Structure Appraisals which would enabled survey work to be more focused on the critical items.
The Structure Appraisal also enabled key information to be gathered for further assessment of the structures and to inform client decisions regarding further maintenance and upgrades. The recommendations of a new PIANC Report (No. 153 Recommendations for the Design and Assessment of Marine and Petrochemical Terminals, 2016) were incorporated throughout.
An example case study project will be used throughout to illustrate the processes involved.
Tanger-Med Container Port
The Tanger-Med 2 (TM2) Container Port is located at one of the world's most strategic seaways, the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea.
The scope includes the civil design for the yard, buildings and container handling equipment infrastructure such as ship to shore crane beams and straddle carrier transfer areas.
A highlight of the project is the design and coordination of the integrated systems for the complete automation of the terminal, which features state of the art technology pioneered at the APM Terminals Maasvlakte II Rotterdam that opened in 2015.
Cayman Islands Cruise Berth Facility
The Cayman Islands Government is developing a Cruise Berth Facility, consisting of two jetties to provide four fixed berths to enable the largest existing cruise vessels to berth at George Town, Grand Cayman. Currently, the cruise lines rely on a tender service between the cruise vessels and the shore.
The cruise berth facility will increase the safety and efficiency of cruise operations and enable Grand Cayman to maintain its position as a key destination in the Caribbean cruise market. Royal HaskoningDHV was appointed as the civil engineering consultant to deliver the design development phase, reviewing previously developed layouts, further developing the marine and landside layouts and developing a preliminary design for the facility.
