About this event

The Pines Hotel in Swanage is located at the top of 30m-high cliffs in the Wealden Formation, which are prone to coastal erosion and landsliding that posed a serious threat to the hotel. Despite complex ground conditions, exceptionally difficult design issues and logistical challenges, cliff stabilisation works were successfully carried out in order to safeguard the future of the hotel.

These comprised soil nails, a reinforced sprayed concrete soil nailed wall, bored pile walls, trench drains, and sub-horizontal drilled drains. The project received the Ground Engineering Awards UK Project of the Year with a geotechnical value of between £1M and £3M for effective logistical problem solving and counterintuitive innovation.
