Greatham South: Flood Alleviation Scheme

About this event

The Environment Agency is investing more than £2.6 Billion across England to reduce the risk of flood and coastal erosion, enhancing the environment and benefitting more than 300,000 homes by 2021. The impact of flooding is clear to us all and is increasing due to climate change and population growth.

On Teesside in December 2013 an east coast tidal surge caused flooding to multiple industrial and residential properties in Port Clarence. At the same time, the south east embankment of Greatham Creek suffered a significant breach causing widespread flooding and disruption to local industry and key locally and nationally important infrastructure. The first phase of work at Port Clarence was completed in 2015 building new raised embankments and removable / demountable flood defences.

Work on Phase 2 along Greatham Creek began in April 2017 and is nearing completion. The Environment Agency have commissioned a multi-faceted project comprising new flood embankments, reducing flood risk whilst creating valuable inter-tidal habitat as part of a managed realignment. Juxtaposed to its heavy industry, the Tees Estuary is a very important area for nature conservation and is designated as a Special Protection Area, a Site of Specific Scientific Interest and is also considered an important wetland site under the Ramsar Convention.

The presentation will describe the Environment Agency’s national investment programme and will set out the challenges and details of how the Greatham Creek Flood Alleviation Scheme has reduced the risk to key infrastructure and the public, whilst also enhancing the wildlife and nature in this very special place.
