Overview
Climate change is one of humanity’s most urgent challenges. Within the construction industry, we are in a position to make a significant positive impact on the UK’s ambitions to reduce emissions.
This presentation will discuss the current situation we face as a construction industry and how we can collaborate to achieve the goal of Net Zero by 2030.
Looking at the key case study of the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Net Zero Award winning Esholt Sewage Treatment Works (STW), Ruth Watson IEng MICE explains a number of innovative methods used on the project to reduce carbon and protect the River Aire.
Ruth will dive into how Mott MacDonald's Moata Carbon Portal (MCP) was used to identify carbon hotspots, giving measurable targets and opportunities to focus design to reduce emissions in those areas.
Further, Ruth will discuss how Esholt STW fit into the wider Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP), implementing a ferric sulfate chemical dosing system, refurbishing existing tertiary solids removal (TSR) sand filters and repurposing an existing pumping station for TSR backwash flows to reduce phosphorus concentrations in the final effluent and improve the water quality of the River Aire. There will also be insights on the use of 3D printing technology used on the project and how this reduced carbon by 40%.
A buffet lunch is available for £14, with optional dessert for £6. Payment information will be provided upon booking.
