We are celebrating Deaf Awareness week (5 to 11 May) by hosting and awareness session run by Deaf Friendly.
Join our insightful and engaging online session focused on increasing Deaf awareness and promoting inclusivity in everyday environments. The session is aimed to empower individuals and organisations with practical tools and knowledge to better support members of the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
The session covered key topics including:
- Common barriers faced by Deaf individuals in daily life.
- Basic communication strategies, such as using clear facial expressions, gestures, and speech-to-text apps.
- An introduction to Deaf culture and the importance of respectful interaction.
- Simple changes that can be made in workplaces, public spaces, and social settings to improve accessibility.
The session will be led by Nadene Scott and Emma Jones as communication support. Nadene has been teaching BSL for many years at college, through her own business, and now with Deaf Friendly Limited and PremierBSL Limited.
Nadene is a qualified teacher/trainer who is passionate about setting high standards in the classroom. Whether teaching BSL or Deaf Awareness, Nadene has a wonderfully calm delivery, engaging students through her gentle but accomplished approach. An active member of the local Deaf community, Nadene experiences a life full of communication barriers every day, so sees the importance of everyone being able to use BSL with her and her friends. With links to her own life, standards come as a given.
Emma has been involved in studying BSL since she was young and is currently finishing her final year of study. Emma has recently joined the Deaf Friendly Limited team and is currently works with Nadene to deliver BSL and Deaf Awareness to children and adults across Wales.
