Overview

Construction of the bridge commenced in 1882 it was opened by the then Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, on 4 March 1980. The iconic bridge is a UNESCO world heritage site and is considered a symbol of Scotland and of Scottish civil engineering.

It was designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker, both past presidents of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and constructed by Sir William Arrol. It continues to be the world's second longest cantilever span, with a span of 1,709 feet, 521m. It was the first major structure in Britian constructed of steel and consists of 55,000 tons of steel held together with 6.5 million rivets.

The anniversary will be celebrated by an evening presentation covering the history of the design and construction and the stories of those that designed and built the bridge, the maintenance and the recent restoration, the world heritage inscription and the future maintenance plans for the bridge.
