Overview

Hong Kong has many monuments which need proper preservation. Currently, there are 136 declared monuments in the territory protected under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance. The preservation of these heritage sites is vital to the community, as it maintains cultural identity, honours historical significance, and ensures a legacy for future generations.

Among the declared monuments, the Tat Tak Communal Hall is the only surviving purpose-built communal hall in Hong Kong, serving as both an assembly and worship space for a joint village alliance, as well as the management office for Ping Shan Market. It is believed to have been one of the meeting places where armed resistance against the British takeover of the New Territories was organised in 1899. The Tat Tak Communal Hall was declared a monument in December 2013.

This seminar provides participants with the opportunity to explore the system of heritage conservation in Hong Kong and delve into the history of Hong Kong's old architecture in order to learn about preservation and restoration techniques. With insights from our experienced speaker, Ir Mingo Li (former senior heritage officer of AMO), attendees will gain both an appreciation and a technical understanding of heritage engineering through the examination of remarkable local examples.
