Overview

Under the project of Contract No. ND/2019/04 Fanling North New Development Area, Phase 1 – Fanling Bypass Eastern Section (Shek Wu San Tsuen North to Lung Yeuk Tau), the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), AECOM Asia Company Limited, Daewoo - Chun Wo - Kwan Lee Joint Venture and other relevant parties pioneered the application of ultra-high strength S960 steel in the engineering and construction of the footbridge.

This groundbreaking breakthrough marks the world’s first implementation of S960 steel in civil bridge construction. Besides reducing the footbridge’s weight and the number of piles which resulted in diminished carbon emissions and enhanced project’s sustainability, the use of S960 steel facilitates off-site prefabrication of S960 steel components and in turn reduces on-site work. It enhances the project’s efficiency, quality and overall productivity.

In this seminar, the practical application of ultra-high strength S960 steel in engineering and construction will be explored based on the above project. Different key aspects and stages of the use of S960 steel in the project will be covered from its research to construction, including but not limited to the research development, design, fabrication, construction and quality assurance.

The challenges and corresponding solutions will also be shared. Participants engaged in discussions surrounding the project's intricacies, seeking to enhance their understanding of utilising ultra-high strength S960 steel in construction projects and the associated best practices and solutions.
