Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a concept and approach to development that aims to leave the natural environment in a better state than it was before. It involves activities that compensate for the biodiversity lost due to development by ensuring that the gain in biodiversity exceeds the loss. This can be achieved through various means, such as creating new habitats, improving existing ones, or restoring degraded ecosystems.
The goal is to ensure that development projects not only minimise their ecological impact but also contribute positively to the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity. This approach is increasingly being adopted in planning and construction projects to ensure sustainable development. In the UK, for example, the government has introduced legislation requiring most new developments to achieve a net gain in biodiversity.
This webinar will present the work undertaken by Dorset Council and WSP to prepare for the introduction of Biodiversity Net Gain. The findings of a study of the supply and demand of development pressure in the county will be discussed alongside the main considerations for the authority in delivering BNG and fulfilling its legal biodiversity duty.
The webinar is hosted by the ICE Dorchester City Club and CIWEM.
