Overview

Please note that this seminar will be held on 24 July 2024 from 19.00 – 20.30 HK time.

Overseas underground developments tend to become increasingly complex. The designer’s focus moves from conventional underground storage or mining facilities to complex traffic hubs coupling different modes of transportation as well as shopping and office areas. A further complexity level is related to the need for evolving uses and an increasing need for safety.

A key issue is related to the lack of specific regulations guiding the design and approval process. Prescriptive building codes are frequently used as guidance, but they are not entirely adequate for complex underground developments. The design approach is therefore supplemented to performance-based designs, which frequently lack a proper regulatory background, in particular in terms of safety objectives, methodological approach and verification criteria.

In the seminar, Dr Marco Bettelini will present the historic evolution, on current developments and on ongoing efforts to provide a better regulatory framework and practical support to designers and operators.

Mr Michael Rehbock-Sander will also give a detailed overview over the status of the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) project, the longest underground railway tunnel in the world with very difficult geological conditions and complex surround conditions. He will describe selected aspects from the excavation works and will give an outlook to the coming challenges and schedule.

As Mr Michael Rehbock-Sander has also been project manager for one of the lots at the Gotthard Basetunnel, to some aspects he will have a look back how things have been handled and solved at the 57 km long Gotthard Basetunnel.

Technical Report Prize:

The event is designated by the HKA committee and is eligible for the Technical Report Prize. ICE HKA awards prizes to ICE members who reside in Hong Kong and prepare reports of a high standard on the caption technical event. Winners will be given a prize of HK$500.

Marco Bettelini graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1984 and obtained his PhD from the Swiss Technical University ETH in Zürich in 1990. After a post-doctoral stage at Brown University in the USA he joined ABB Corporate Research and subsequently hold leading positions in renowned Swiss engineering companies. He joined the Amberg group in 2009 and he is currently Director for Safety and Ventilation. He worked on some of the longest and most challenging tunnels worldwide, including the Mont Blanc (11.6 km) and Gotthard (16.7 km) road tunnels and the Gotthard rail base tunnel (57 km).  

His main research interests are related to advanced ventilation control and safety of complex underground   infrastructure.  He regularly attends the leading national and international conferences, authored over 150 technical papers and cooperates actively with national and international professional associations, including the Swiss Tunneling Society, the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association – Committee on Operational Safety of Underground Facilities (ITA-COSUF) and SIA.

Michael Rehbock-Sander

After studying mining in Germany and several years in the German hard coal mining industry, Michael Rehbock-Sander has been working at Amberg Engineering in Switzerland for almost 35 years. By combining his experience in tunnelling and mining, he has acquired in-depth knowledge of project management, civil engineering, planning in all phases and execution.  

Since 1998 he has worked as a project manager for large underground infrastructure projects, such as the 57km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, or currently as the overall project manager of the Design Joint Venture (JV) for the Brenner Base Tunnel at the Austrian side. Since 2000 he has been working on projects in other European and non-European countries and was involved in setting up the various branches of Amberg Engineering in Spain, the Czech Republic, India and Singapore.  

Through this international activity, Michael Rehbock-Sander has built up high technical and social competence even in a demanding international environment and supports you in bringing your project to a successful conclusion on a high technical level, on time and within the specified financial framework.
