Overview

Industry codes and standards will be required to innovate to meet the demands of the energy transition. Much of the proven practice used for the engineering of offshore foundations today has its roots in the oil and gas industry.

However, the energy transition will require engineering practice to achieve a reliable and economic foundation design at a very large scale when compared to the oil and gas industries. This presentation focuses on ISO 19901-4, how the content of that standard has developed, the goals of a design process and what innovation it already enables.

The presentation then discusses engineering techniques that have yet to find their way into regular use offshore including, probabilistic design, full integration of geotechnical and geophysical data, the observational method and performance-based design. It then moves on to look at emerging techniques including synthetic CPTs and artificial intelligence.

Neil Morgan is team leader of the geotechnical team at Lloyd's Register working on geotechnical aspects of offshore structures, pipelines, cables and moorings within the renewables and oil and gas industries.

He is also convener of the ISO/TC67/SC7/WG10 committee on offshore geotechnical ISO standards, covering content of ISO 19901-4, ISO 19901-8 and ISO 19901-10. He has various research interests in the offshore geotechnical field including pile design, suction caissons and floating wind as well as how industry codes and standards are applied in practice.
