Overview
The HS2 project is currently Europe’s largest construction project. In the Thames Valley Branch area the works in progress comprise the full range of roads, piling, tunnelling, bridge and viaduct construction and a slew of associated activities which, we feel, should appeal to all members on an early Spring day out. The Retired Members Group committee are anticipating a further set of site visits to HS2 works zones as the project continues to spread across the region, so whilst numbers may be limited on this visit there will be future opportunities to see construction in the “flesh”.
This visit will see the deck construction of the Wendover Viaduct, nearly 1 kilometre in total length, and Small Dean Viaducts which is ongoing. At Wendover Dean the steel frame was launched in May last year and works have now progressed to the stage of concrete deck construction; the total viaduct deck is scheduled to take nearly 12 months to complete.
At Small Dean Viaduct we will see the revised A413 road works involved in diverting the main road to permit the balance of the foundation piling and pier construction between the road and live Network Rail lines. Steelwork for the deck has launched as this advertisement is being written and the March visit will see the commencement of deck preparation works.
The number of delegates is restricted to 20 and FULL ORANGE PPE will be provided for those who do not have their own personal kit. Please advise your sizes of kit and vehicle registration number.
