Overview

The aim of this event is to facilitate knowledge sharing among members of the Institution of Civil Engineers Malaysia (ICEM), with a particular focus on the growing need for cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure solutions. As Malaysia continues to expand its road and highway networks to support economic growth and connectivity, engineers and planners are seeking innovative approaches to enhance road performance, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact.

This presentation will explore the role of stabilization geogrids in Malaysia’s road construction, particularly in overcoming Malaysia’s unique geotechnical challenges, including weak subgrades, high rainfall, and/or heavy traffic loads. By creating an interlocking and confining mechanically stabilized layer, geogrids enhance load distribution, reduce aggregate requirements, accelerate construction progress, extend pavement lifespan, and contribute to carbon savings. These advantages are vital for Malaysia’s extensive expressway network, rural road systems, and large-scale infrastructure projects, where resilience, durability, and long-term cost efficiency (includes whole life cost) are paramount.

Drawing from local case studies and applications, the session will evaluate both the opportunities and challenges, considering Malaysia’s climate, soil conditions, and infrastructure development objectives. By examining the role of stabilization geogrids in Malaysia’s road and highway sector, this session aims to provide valuable insights into how innovative engineering solutions can support the nation’s sustainable infrastructure goals.
