Overview
Stress is everywhere! It can be good; it can be bad. In engineering there could be stresses due to compression, traffic loading, temperature effects, water deficits or simply the effective stress in soils! When understood we can manage it and even introduce factors to ensure our designs do not exceed the allowable stresses. We can, with the right knowledge and understanding, design engineering solutions to last in a temporary condition or for a hundred years or more.
Preparing for the professional review with the Institution of Civil Engineers can be stressful. With the right professional experience and preparation, it should be possible to manage the situation. Civil engineering is naturally a very collaborative industry. With this in mind we are hosting a physical preparation evening for people who live and work in the Kent and East Sussex area. This event will ideally suit engineers who are seeking to achieve professional recognition at the ICE within the next 12 months.
The professional review is the final step in becoming a professionally qualified member of the ICE. It is a holistic assessment conducted against a report, presentation, interview and communication task. You’ll be assessed by two peer reviewers at your Professional Review and, to be successful, they must agree that you have met all the ICE attributes at the relevant level. The review is an opportunity to demonstrate you have the professional competence and commitment that is required to become a Member of ICE.
During the evening there will be a short presentation about the review day followed an opportunity for every attendee to take part in a live ‘mini mock’ review. The ‘mini mock’ will include a 15 minute presentation by the attendee, 15 minutes of questioning by the reviewer(s) and 15 minutes of feedback. This is the key component to the event. So, once you have booked do start your preparations for the evening and create a 15 minute presentation which you can deliver to two people you have never met across a table. The mini mocks will be conducted in a calm, professional and supportive environment. You will get out of the evening what you put in, so come prepared.
This is a practical opportunity to explore how you could behave under stress. It will enable you to experience how you may think and feel when you sit your own professional review. It could help you to manage the situation more effectively. Ultimately it could help you improve how you communicate and discuss your professional abilities on your professional review day.
*This event will include food/snacks & soft drinks, there will be plenty of opportunities for refreshment and networking.
