Overview
The Derry/Londonderry Nature Based Catchment Management Study is a pilot strategy undertaken by the Northern Ireland Department for Infrastructure’s (DfI’s) Living with Water Programme (LWWP).
An initial study that was focused on the benefits to the A2 Buncrana Road Strategic Road Improvement (SRI) scheme was commissioned by DfI Roads. It considered the potential for an alternative approach to meet the surface water attenuation requirements. This study developed into a wider catchment review supported by the LWWP. It examined the potential to revolutionise the way drainage and wastewater is managed in the north-west of the city, by applying a sustainable, catchment-based solutions approach. The outcomes of the study demonstrate the value of principles advocated by LWWP, and act as a blueprint for the new approach being rolled out across Northern Ireland.
This presentation will discuss the scope and principles of the Nature Based Catchment Management Study. It will consider the benefits of applying innovative solutions and demonstrate how these can coexist alongside hard engineering infrastructure. This will highlight how a long-term strategic approach to drainage and wastewater management can create a thriving, resilient city which is prepared for the future.
