Lunch and Learn: Portrush Train Station

Overview

The announcement that the Royal Portrush Golf Club was set to host The 148^th Open in July 2019 was a key driver in the commissioning of a project to re-develop the existing train station in Portrush. Efficient operational performance of the railway station would be crucial in transporting the large number of spectators to and from this major sporting event.

In 2016, Doran Consulting was appointed as Economic Operator, Project Manager, Civil and Structural Engineer, and Site Supervisor to deliver the re-development of Portrush Train Station located on Eglinton Street, Portrush.

Prior to the re-development, this terminal station comprised of a small ticket office and approximately 50m of platform canopy (Platform 1). All three platforms showed signs of disrepair.

The newly constructed, state-of-the-art facility comprises a modern single storey station building (400m2 GIA) with all necessary staff and customer provisions, 3 upgraded platforms (525m), including extensions to platforms 1 & 2 (30m) and a feature boundary wall (225m) along Eglinton Street. The perforated panel images facing Eglinton Street capture the essence of the town, featuring events and scenes synonymous with Portrush.

Doran Consulting was responsible for the preparation of contract documents in line with NEC3 Engineering & Construction Contract as well as the associated works information. GRAHAM Construction Ltd commenced construction works in April 2018 and the job was completed in May 2019.

James Martin, Doran Consulting Assistant Project Manager will provide an overview of the project development from feasibility through to construction, highlighting the key design issues, stakeholder engagement and public consultations. John Derry, GRAHAM Project Manager will provide an overview of some of the construction challenges faced and explain how these where managed during the construction phase.
