Overview

“People say that it can't work, black and white. Here, we make it work every day. We still have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always, always, we remember the Titans.” - Sheryl Yoast, Remember the Titans.

Sport has the wonderful capacity to galvanise different and sometimes divided communities as it creates a shared interest. By virtue of its diverse talent alone, sport ought to be inclusive and it ought to espouse values such as fairness, respect and allyship. However, several sporting events in 2021 brought sharply into focus the real need for pause and deeper reflection on the role of sporting talent, management and governing bodies in supporting a decrease in racial tension and promoting national unity and pride.

By reflecting on one of the greatest sports movies ever made, this talk discusses how embracing diversity, like the Titans did, we need to go beyond a team’s success in order to bring about meaningful change in attitude and behaviours.

Remember the Titans: A great lesson on leadership, cooperation, perseverance, and racial harmony will be presented by Mara-Tafadzwa Makoni.
