The talk covered use of structural timber to sequester carbon – the only working approach to store carbon in the short and medium-term. Yet use of structural timber is rejected by many. In the meantime, English trees have been wiped out by Dutch Elm, are dying everywhere with Ash Die-Back, acres of forest in the NE are now being cleared to restrict the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum and ‘sudden larch death’. The lecture explored the woods and the choices: use and store the timber, burn it, or let it rot.
