Overview
Predicting the next major flood or drought event is of paramount interest to water managers. In particular, understanding the behaviour of streamflow and groundwater resources is critical in estimating the risk associated with these hydrological extremes.
Here, we will discuss new evidence for a multi-year cycle exhibited by the majority of UK water resources that, until recently, was hidden. This cycle can account for up to 30% of river flow behaviour and up to 40% groundwater level behaviour, with impacts on the recurrence of flooding and droughts. In this webinar we will review the nature and implications of this cycle in the UK and discuss its origin.
