The town of Shoreham is vulnerable to tidal flooding from the River Adur. The risk of tidal flooding will increase over time as climate change leads to sea level rise and rainfall events become more frequent. The old defences in Shoreham-by-Sea were coming to the end of their useful life and were of variable heights.
The Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme will improve the flood defences and provide better protection from tidal flooding to properties and businesses on both the east and west banks of the River Adur, situated between Brighton and Worthing on the south coast of Sussex. The scheme will protect around 2,450 residents and commercial properties and this number is likely to double in the next 100 years.
The scheme is being led by the Environment Agency in conjunction with the project partners: Adur District Council, Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership and West Sussex County Council.
The Environment Agency has employed the services of Mott Macdonald to design and Team Van Oord to undertake the construction of this project.
In total, the scheme will improve 7.2 kilometres of tidal defences, with designs incorporating steel sheet pile walls with concrete capping and brickwork, embankments, concrete walls and rock revetments.
Representatives from the Environment Agency will provide a background to the project. Members of Mott Macdonald will give an overview of the design and Team Van Oord will highlight the challenges during the construction phase, and how they overcame them.
